Drill bit point cuts in accordance with DIN 1412
Shape N: Helical point normal ground
Applications: this type of drill bit point is for normal drilling work in steel, non-ferrous metal plastic. The point angles depend on the ease with which the materials can be cut.
Advantages of this type drill bit point: Powerful main cut, resistant to impact and lateral forces. Simple manual grinding possible.
Disadvantages of this type drill bit point: Broad cutting edge requires considerable pressure.
Shape A: Cut chisel edge
Applications: this type of drill bit point is for normal drilling work using drills with a strong core, for drilling into solid materials with larger drill diameters
Advantages of Shape A drill bit: this type of drill bit point is good centering when starting to drill, as the length of the chisel edge is reduced to 1/10 of the drill diameter, and fewer pressure is required.
Disadvantages of Shape A drill bit: Shape A point drill bit needs additional regrinding work.
Shape B: Cut chisel edge with corrected major cutting edge
Applications: Shape B pointed drill bit is for drilling high-density steel, for manganese steel with over 10% Mn, for hard spring steel and for drilling out.
Advantages of Shape B drill bit: this type of drill bit point is resistant to impact, one-way load and lateral forces. This point drill bit does not catch in thin workpieces
Disadvantages of Shape B drill bit: Shape B point drill bit is high pressure required, tendency to slip, extra work involved in regrinding
Shape C: Split point
Applications: Split point is for drill bit with very strong cores, for particularly tough, hard materials and for deep-hole drills
Advantages of Shape C drill bit: this type of drill bit point is good centering, little pressure required. Chip spreading improves chip removal.
Disadvantages of Shape C drill bit: Shape C point drill bit needs special machine to perfectly grind.
Shape D: Ground for grey cast iron
Applications: Shape D drill bit is for drilling grey cast iron, malleable cast iron and forgings.
Advantages of Shape D drill bit: Wear on cutting corners is reduced by extended major cutting edges, resistant to impact, good heat conductivity, all giving improved tool life.
Disadvantages of Shape D drill bit: extra work involved in regrinding.
Shape E: Center point
Applications: Shape E drill bit is for drilling sheet-metal and soft materials, for blind holes with flat bottoms.
Advantages of Shape E drill bit: Good centering, minimal formation of burrs when through-drilling, precise drilling in thin sheets and pipes, does not catch. availabe in diameters of 2.5mm upwards.
Disadvantages of Shape E drill bit: Sensitive to impact and one-way loading. Shape E point drill bit needs special machine to perfectly grind.
Shape U: Special ground
Applications: Shape U point is for drills with sturdy profiles suitable for use in automated processing, with narrow grooves and strong cores.
Advantages of Shape U drill bit: extremely good self-centering behaviour when maximum cutting valuminiumes are employed. Concave cutting produces short metal chips.
Disadvantages of Shape U drill bit: Extra work needed to regrind
